The following video is from Friday's installment of The Motley Fool's Weekly Tech Review, in which host Chris Hill and analysts Eric Bleeker and Jason Moser take a look at the biggest stories driving the tech sector this week.
Consumers could be forgiven for ignoring advances in the PC processor space. After all, with technology spending having rapdily shifted to smartphones and tablets over the past half-decade, they quickly became an afterthought. Not only that, but with mobile processors highlighting power efficiency from ARM-based devices from the likes of Qualcomm, the need for performance has taken a back seat to processors that sip on battery life rather than Intel processors that quickly run battery life down.
Yet Intel has more than taken note of the trend, and its newest processor lineup, named Haswell, should be very exciting for consumers. Haswell chips are in the newest MacBook Air, and are a huge factor in allowing the computers' batteries to last a stunning 13 hours (or more!) between charges.
In the video, Eric discusses how Haswell is a big step for PCs in overcoming some of the shortcomings they have versus tablets. As he describes it, the line between tablets and ultrabook-style PCs will continue blurring, and Haswell was a necessary step in keeping Intel at the forefront of the next generation of PC designs.
