Top Dividend Stocks To Buy For 2014

If you haven't noticed, it's earnings season once again! Believe it or not, there are times when earnings reports slow down in frequency, but this is certainly not one of those times. In the health-care sector we have 71 companies set to report next week, according to Finviz, so it definitely pays to be prepared. Here's your personal cheat sheet to the five companies reporting next week that I've got my eye on and that you can't afford to miss.

Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY  ) : Lilly is in the midst of a very dangerous period in its company's history, since it's set to lose a good chunk of its revenue to patent expirations between now and 2017. Reports from Eli Lilly have confirmed that the company is planning layoffs to reduce expenses, but a report by The Wall Street Journal indicated that layoffs could reach as many as 1,000 people. It's therefore extremely important -- especially considering that so many income investors rely on Lilly's dividend -- to keep an eye on what the company has to say about what's going on in its pipeline and what actions it's taking to reduce costs. Lilly's first-quarter expectations are for 1% sales growth and a 14% jump in EPS, but I'm not convinced that they'll reach those targets. WellPoint (NYSE: WLP  ) : This will be one of the first looks we get at WellPoint, which purchased Amerigroup last summer to gain access to the millions of Medicaid members under its fold. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is coming up on eight months until it's fully in effect, and insurers are looking as if they won't be in nearly as bad a shape as it was first suspected when the bill was passed. Keep your ears open for anything management might have to say about premiums, and certainly key on anything WellPoint has to say with regard to the PPACA, also known as Obamacare. Revneue is expected to jump 19% (mainly from its acquisition of Amerigroup) to $18 billion, while EPS are forecast to jump $0.04 to $2.38 from the year-ago period.�

Could the Obamacare Dream Turn Into a Nightmare for This Industry?

If we were to draw two columns -- one for winners from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or PPACA, and another for losers -- the word "hospitals" would probably be listed near the top in the winner's column. Large hospital chains Health Management Association (NYSE: HMA  ) and Tenet Healthcare (NYSE: THC  ) , have seen their stocks more than double over the past year, while Community Health Systems (NYSE: CYH  ) is up around 75%.

Investors flocked to hospital stocks in anticipation of the full implementation of PPACA, commonly referred to as Obamacare. In the minds of many, Obamacare presented a dream come true for helping hospitals to flourish. But could that dream now be turning into a nightmare for the industry?

Pleasant dreams
Many hospitals currently write off large amounts of bad debt when patients can't pay for services. They also often face competition from specialty physician-owned hospitals that are sometimes accused of cherry-picking the most lucrative patients with generous insurance benefits.

Key components of Obamacare sounded great to hospital operators. Medicaid would be expanded in all of the states to cover more uninsured Americans. The legislation's employer mandate promised to force all but the smallest employers to provide health insurance with extensive benefits or pay steep fines. Likewise, most individuals not covered by their employers or through government programs would be required to purchase insurance or pay fines. The dream of reducing those huge bad debt write-offs seemed attainable.

Obamacare also prohibited the establishment of new physician-owned hospitals. For ones already in existence, the bill placed restrictions on expansion. While Obamacare didn't fulfill the wildest dreams of hospitals not run by physicians, it seemed to deliver some pleasant changes to the status quo.

Rude awakenings
The biggest drawback for Obamacare was that hospitals had to go along with $155 billion in Medicare and Medicaid cuts. That wasn't considered too bad, though, since they would get that money back and then some, with all of those previously uninsured patients gaining insurance. Unfortunately, there have been a few rude awakenings disrupting the dream.

First, the Supreme Court ruled last summer that Obamacare's requirement that states expand Medicaid was unconstitutional. As of last count, 18 states opted to either not expand Medicaid or are leaning in that direction.

Earlier this month, the White House delayed implementation of the employer mandate that was scheduled to go into effect in 2014. The House of Representatives is also pushing forward with a proposed delay of the individual mandate.

Meanwhile, those Medicare and Medicaid cuts are scheduled to move forward. This has prompted calls by the American Hospital Association to push back the cuts along with the employer mandate, especially since the employer mandate delay "comes at a time when there is significant uncertainty regarding Medicaid expansion."

What about those physician-owned hospitals? They're actually making more money under Obamacare. Of the physician-owned hospitals eligible for quality incentives enacted by the law, 75% are receiving higher reimbursement. For hospitals not owned by physicians, 74% received penalties rather than incentive payments.

Nightmares ahead?
Investors are still banking on having millions of newly insured Americans help hospitals' financial performance. However, the possibility exists that the dreams could turn into nightmares.

Employers have been adding more part-time workers than full-timers, and in some cases, they're converting their full-timers to part-timers. Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, says companies may be seeking to avoid paying for insurance as required by Obamacare

The key to success for Obamacare's individual mandate is for young Americans who are currently uninsured to buy insurance through health insurance exchanges. That might prove more difficult than initially thought. ADP Research Institute found that only half of young adults with coverage through their employers take advantage of it. ADP's Tim Clifford says the penalties for individuals who don't buy insurance are "kind of invisible," since they aren't assessed until taxes are filed and are "probably not enough to change behavior."

Even if we assume that these concerns are overblown and Obamacare results in significantly fewer uninsured patients, hospitals could have another worry. Paul Keckley, executive director for the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, recently told hospital executives that "there is no scenario, looking forward, where bad debt goes down."

Deloitte ran multiple models assessing the impact of Obamacare, only to find that the assumption of reduced bad-debt write-offs that many hospitals have counted on could be wrong. A key issue is that an increasingly higher percentage of hospitals' bad debt actually stems from patients who have insurance. Insured patients with high deductibles often don't pay what they owe.

Winners column
A potential bright spot remains for some hospitals, though, even if many of the earlier dreams fade away. Obamacare is one of several factors pushing hospitals toward consolidation to achieve efficiencies. Tenet, for example, recently announced plans to buy Vanguard Health Systems (NYSE: VHS  ) . If the deal goes through, the combined organization will include 79 hospitals and 157 outpatient clinics. There has also been buzz that Community Health Systems might buy HMA.

The efficiencies resulting from consolidation are nice, but an even greater advantage could come from the pricing leverage obtained as a result of larger scale. One study found that hospitals raised prices 40% after mergers that absorbed nearby rivals. Such cost savings and pricing powers could keep large hospitals in the Obamacare winner's column despite the other issues. Unfortunately, they could add to the loser's column, too.

Canada Stocks Rise as Commodity Producers Rally on China

Canadian stocks rose, capping a fourth straight week of gains for the benchmark index, as an increase in metals prices boosted materials producers and China planned to remove the floor on lending rates.

Centerra Gold Inc. added 4.2 percent as the metal's price climbed for a second week. Athabasca Oil Corp. jumped 6.7 percent as oil rose to a 16-month high. BlackBerry Ltd. fell 1.3 percent, reversing an earlier rally of as much as 2.2 percent.

The Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index rose 56.28 points, or 0.5 percent, to 12,685.13 at 4 p.m. in Toronto. The benchmark gauge rallied 1.8 percent for the week. Trading volume was 8.4 percent below the 30-day average at this time of day.

"Materials, energy and financials are really the main areas," said John Kinsey, fund manager with Caldwell Securities Ltd. in Toronto. He helps manage about $1 billion ($953 million). "There's a large commodity factor in the Toronto market. Gold and energy or oil stocks are up and it is nice to see them following the commodities. Financials have had a nice run and are pausing a bit today but are still up."

A government report showed inflation in June quickening for a second month in June as the prices of gasoline and automobiles rebounded. The consumer price index rose 1.2 percent from a year ago following a 0.7 percent gain in May, matching the Bloomberg economist surveys forecast, Statistics Canada said today from Ottawa.

'Subdued' Inflation

Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz said this week that inflation will remain below his 2 percent target until mid-2015 and stay "subdued" over the next few months.

The People's Bank of China said it will remove the floor on lending rates offered by financial institutions starting tomorrow. The announcement builds on pledges by Premier Li Keqiang to expand an overhaul of interest rates, a development the World Bank says must be a priority in reform of the financial system.

Four of 10 groups in the S&P/TSX advanced, led by a 2 percent gain among producers of raw materials.

Centerra Gold added 4.2 percent to C$4.27 and Detour Gold Corp. increased 6.7 percent to C$10. The price of the metal rose 0.7 percent to $1,294 an ounce in New York. Silver and copper also advanced.

Athabasca Oil jumped 6.7 percent to C$7 and Penn West Petroleum Ltd. gained 6.3 percent to C$12.91. Oil was up 1 cent to $108.05 a barrel after climbing as much as 1.2 percent.

Financial shares rose 0.2 percent for the fourth gain in five sessions. The S&P/TSX Commercial Banks Index rose for the seventh straight day to trade near a record high.

BlackBerry dropped 1.3 percent to C$9.30. The stock was up as much as 2.2 percent after BMO Capital Markets analyst Timothy Long upgraded his rating from underperform to market perform, an equivalent of hold. Long said the stock had less downside after plunging 38 percent since June 27, the day before the company reported disappointing sales.

Tom Gardner: What about integration? How can an outside investor follow Middleby and know how to understand how integration is happening? Because that's another problem area for companies that make acquisitions. The cultures are different, the compensation philosophy is different and the attempt to force that business; we had the chief customer officer of Land's End. Land's End was an incredible business, an incredible stock. It was an absolutely incredible stock in the '80s and '90s, and the founder decided to sell the company. And he sold it to Sears and that utterly destroyed Land's End. The culture of Sears crushed the innovation, the love of company that employees had at Land's End, and is not the same company at all today. So I understand management remains in place; that's one thing that keeps that culture intact, but what are you trying to integrate into Middleby and what are you trying to allow to be decentralized in...?

Selim Bassoul: Middleby has been buying a lot of privately held companies, mostly family owned or an entrepreneurial founder. We try to keep the management in place. We don't have people sitting on the bench at Middleby. We're (unclear), so we don't take people from Middleby and turn them over to the new acquisition. If we don't believe that management is capable to stay at that company, we do not buy that company. That's No 1.

No. 2: It's literally a mixture between an IPO and a private equity what Middleby buys. We provide liquidity to that management or to that founder/entrepreneur. Then when they come into us, that company could not have been able to go to China, Brazil, India, Middle East, Mexico, without our infrastructure, so it gives them an access, immediate access to international. In many cases, those companies also have not the ability to build the relation they have with the supplier, given the scale we have, so the first thing becomes another leverage.

No. 3: The most exciting for us is we provide earnout. There's an earnout to make sure that those people retain value as they help us make the money we're going to make as investors into that company, and we leave them autonomy. They continue operating on their own. We leave them getting that patent technology going; however, in many instances they lack credibility within the chains.

The most important -- we'll talk about it later -- is our no-quibble warranty. Now, suddenly, I take a company that has a disruptive technology, that has no ability to get to a Olive Garden or Red Lobster, just because there's no president or VP of operation at an Olive Garden that has 850 stores, that's going to come in and take a company that's $20 million, hasn't been tested and roll it, gives them an order as big as that company is.

And at Middleby, we give that guarantee. We've had a relationship with those customers and they understand. If something was wrong, we're going to stand behind it. We're going to train; we're going to implement it right. We're going to take it overseas, in the case, for example, for Yum! where we take that technology overseas, and we're going to basically train their people, whether it's in India or in China or in the Philippines in our own test kitchen, which a small company could not do.

The Dawn of DuPont, and Other Economic Milestones

The company popularly known as DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) is a shortened form of "E.I. du Pont de Nemours," itself a shortened version of the name Eluthere Irenee du Pont de Nemours, a Paris-born chemist with particular expertise as a gunpowder manufacturer. It was on July 19, 1802, on the banks of the Brandywine River in Delaware, that du Pont broke ground on the first gunpowder mills that gave rise to the DuPont chemical empire.

The du Pont family had arrived in Delaware at the turn of the 19th century after escaping the worst of the French Revolution. E.I. du Pont's father had been a minor noble and successful politician before the Reign of Terror, and his defense of doomed King Louis XVI from a besieging mob in 1792 nearly cost him his head in the guillotines. The elder du Pont later wound up playing an important role in the Louisiana Purchase by negotiating much of the deal on behalf of President Thomas Jefferson.

Family connections offered the chemist E.I. du Pont the chance to meet a former French army officer working with the U.S. military to procure better gunpowder. The officer convinced du Pont to go into the gunpowder business, as American-made gunpowder was inferior to European product. After a return to France in 1801 to raise capital and procure the proper manufacturing equipment, du Pont had everything he needed to get started.

The company was initially capitalized at a value of $36,000 -- roughly $780,000 today -- and it was initially structured as a partnership under du Pont's control. The mills produced du Pont's first product after two years of construction and development, and his superior know-how soon established him as a prime source of gunpowder in the United States. The War of 1812 provided a major sales boost, and by the time of du Pont's death in 1934, the company was one of the U.S. Army's primary gunpowder suppliers. This relationship continued through the Civil War, when DuPont supplied half the powder used by the Union Army.

DuPont's utter dominance of the exploding-stuff industries eventually led to an antitrust suit from the federal government, and the company was forced to divest much of its manufacturing operations in 1912. That didn't stop the company from continuing to grow -- two years later, DuPont began building a stake in General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) , originally valued at $50 million, that would grow into a $2.7 billion hoard by the time another antitrust suit forced the two companies apart. During its period of ownership, DuPont had significant influence over the automaker -- it's largely thanks to DuPont that cars took on more colorful hues in the 1920s. DuPont also joined the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) in the 1920s, at which point it was already making nearly $100 million in annual revenue.

DuPont had begun experimenting with non-exploding chemicals after its 1912 divestiture order, but the 1930s brought some of its greatest successes: it introduced neoprene to the public in 1931, and began producing nylon in 1935. DuPont also rejoined the Dow that year -- its first stay did not last long, but it has remained part of the Dow since 1935. DuPont's advances also proved essential to the Allied effort during World War II. Nylon was important in the production of many battlefield materials, but DuPont also helped build the facilities and reactors used in the Manhattan Project. After the war, DuPont developed a number of new synthetic materials, including Mylar, Dacron (polyester), Lycra (spandex), Kevlar, Corian, and Tyvek (the latter two are commonly used in housing construction).

Today, DuPont is the second-largest chemical company in the United States by revenue, and is one of the 10 largest chemical companies in the world. The company's $45.8 billion market cap on its 210th anniversary was a nearly 5.9 million percent gain over the real value of E.I. du Pont's first powder mills.

The old peaks
The Dow closed above 14,000 points for the first time on July 19, 2007. Its final close, 14,000.41, was right on the nose, and was boosted by solid earnings across a wide array of Dow components, including technology stalwarts and industrial manufacturers. However, all eyes remained on Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, who'd recently warned that subprime mortgage losses might reach to $100 billion.

By the end of July, the Dow had fallen below 14,000 again, but it clawed its way back above that mark by early October. That would be the highest the Dow would reach for years, as the subprime-driven financial meltdown began to wreak havoc on investments of every kind. The Dow finally regained 14,000 points nearly six years later, in the winter of 2013. Time will tell whether it has left that level behind for good.

Seaborne luxury's simple beginnings
The first Cunard liner, a paddle-wheel steamship called the Britannia, arrived at Boston Harbor on July 19, 1840, after 14 days at sea on its first voyage across the Atlantic. Built for Samuel Cunard's British and North American Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company primarily as a mail carrier, it was the first of several sister steamships that would establish the only consistent line of service between Britain and the United States, leaving Cunard as one of the last shipping companies standing in a brutally competitive mid-19th-century environment. The company renamed itself, 14 years after Cunard's death, to the Cunard Steamship Company. At this time, the company began its transition to a more luxurious passenger-liner operator, and in 1881, Cunard launched the first such liner fully rigged with electric lighting.

At the turn of the century, Cunard took on greater prominence in the British consciousness, as German companies began to launch liners of ever larger record-breaking size. Cunard's answers to this blow to British egos were the Lusitania and Mauretania, the former of which some eagle-eyed history buffs will recognize as the ship that helped push the United States into World War I. Several years after the war, Cunard acquired its former competitor White Star, operator of the infamous Titanic, and, in the 1930s it began construction on the iconic Queen Elizabeth, the original QE.

The Cunard line was acquired by Carnival (NYSE: CCL  ) , which now operates Cunard as a traditional British-style luxury brand. Cunard presently operates three liners, the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Victoria, and the Queen Elizabeth, the latter of which was built beginning in 2007, and the former of which is the largest ocean-going cruise liner in the world.

Cunard's rise to prominence was aided by the development of modern ocean-liner construction, which was first put to use to build the SS Great Britain, launched from the Bristol docks exactly three years after the Britannia reached Boston, on July 19, 1843. It was the first iron-hulled, screw-propelled liner in the world, and it set the standards that have contributed to propelled-ship designs for over a century. Although the Great Britain required several major retrofits to fully take advantage of her innovative design in her first years of operation, the durable vessel remained mostly seaworthy (except for one grounding in 1846) until a fire rendered her little more than a floating storage hulk in 1886. Today, the restored Great Britain can be visited at the same Bristol dry docks that launched her, where she stands as a museum to naval history.

Black gold in the great white north
The first commercial discovery of oil in Alaska -- then only a territory -- took place on July 19, 1957. That day, the Richfield Oil Company struck success at over 11,000 feet deep in a part of what's now the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, an area just south of Anchorage. Their well soon began producing 900 barrels per day, and other wells soon came up with oil, too. Once the federal government caught wind of the discovery, Alaskan statehood took on a greater sense of urgency, and the Great White North became the 49th state two years later.

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay oilfield the following decade turned Alaska into a natural-resource powerhouse. The state's importance to American energy interests proved so acute during the OPEC oil embargo of 1973, that President Richard Nixon authorized the construction of a Trans-Alaska Pipeline within months of the embargo's enactment. BP (NYSE: BP  ) , which now owns Richfield (Richfield became ARCO in 1966 ), also owns nearly half of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which has successfully transported over 17 billion barrels of oil since it came online. All told, Alaska itself has earned over $160 billion in oil revenues since it became a state in 1959.

    The Travelers Companies Inc. (NYSE: TRV) is expected to rise by only 7.6% to $77.26 in 2013. That would represent a 52-week high but this one also has a yield of 2.6%. We would note that the street high target is actually all the way up at $87.00 and shares are currently very close to all-time highs. This insurance provider and financial services giant is not tied into healthcare so it has been immune to some of the ongoing risks. Travelers held up rather well in the recession but many investors do not even know it i one of the 30 DJIA components.

    Shares are trading around $51.50 at the time of writing, as against their 52-week trading range of $45.97 to $64.17. At the current market price, the company is capitalized at $21.64 billion. Earnings per share for the last year were $5.29, placing the shares on a price to earnings ratio of 9.77. It paid a dividend of $1.64 (a yield of 3.20%).

    Still in the memory is the financial crisis of 2008, and the mess that insurance companies like AIG managed to get themselves into. Travelers avoided that, but investors are fickle creatures and sometimes look at the short term rather than the long term. Travelers are well managed with good prospects going forward. Operating margins of nearly 13% hold well against rivals Hartford Financial Services Group (HIG) at around 10% and W.R. Berkley Corporation (WRB) at a shade under 14%. Good management should keep gross margins healthy (currently 26.5% versus Hartford’s 30% and W.R. Berkely’s 18%), and the company’s ongoing policy of share repurchases and dividend payout should continue to add value to shareholders. A good buy.

    This insurer never ran into trouble like so many of its cohorts and yet somehow hasn't received the kudos its management deserves for steering the ship through the shoals of bad investments. Jay Fishman, the CEO, is easily the best executive in the insurance industry and Travelers will get its due in 2011, which will make it so that its 12% return in 2010 will seem quite small. I think it can trade to $68 and not be expensive, particularly when people begin to give the well-run insurers a nice premium to the ne'er-do-wells.

As of December 31, 2012, its principal mortgage insurance subsidiaries, Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC) and MGIC Indemnity Corporation (MIC), were each licensed in all 50 states of the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. During the year ending December 31, 2012, the Company wrote new insurance in each of those jurisdictions in MGIC and/or MIC. Mortgage Insurance

Primary insurance provides mortgage default protection on individual loans and covers unpaid loan principal, delinquent interest and certain expenses associated with the default and subsequent foreclosure. Primary insurance is written on first mortgage loans secured by owner occupied single-family homes, which are one-to-four family homes and condominiums. Primary insurance is also written on first liens secured by non-owner occupied single-family homes, which are referred to in the home mortgage lending industry as investor loans, and on vacation or second homes. Primary coverage can be used on any type of residential mortgage loan instrument approved by the mortgage insurer.

When a borrower refinances a mortgage loan insured by the Company by paying it off in full with the proceeds of a new mortgage that is also insured by it, the insurance on that existing mortgage is cancelled, and insurance on the new mortgage is considered to be new primary insurance written. Therefore, continuation of its coverage fr! om a refinanced loan to a new loan results in both a cancellation of insurance and new insurance written. When a lender and borrower modify a loan rather than replace it with a new one, or enter into a new loan pursuant to a loan modification program, its insurance continues without being cancelled assuming that the Company consent to the modification or new loan.

The borrower�� mortgage loan instrument requires the borrower to pay the mortgage insurance premium. There are several payment plans available to the borrower, or lender, as the case may be. Under the monthly premium plan, the borrower or lender pays it a monthly premium payment to provide only one month of coverage. Under the annual premium plan, an annual premium is paid to it in advance, and it earns and recognizes the premium over the next 12 months of coverage, with annual renewal premiums paid in advance thereafter and earned over the subsequent 12 months of coverage. Under the single premium plan, the borrower or lender pays it a single payment covering a specified term exceeding twelve months.

Pool insurance is used as an additional credit enhancement for certain secondary market mortgage transactions. Pool insurance covers the excess of the loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which exceeds the claim payment under the primary coverage, if primary insurance is required on that mortgage loan, as well as the total loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which did not require primary insurance. Pool insurance is used as an additional credit enhancement for certain secondary market mortgage transactions. Pool insurance covers the excess of the loss on a defaulted mortgage loan, which exceeds the claim payment under the primary coverage, if primary insurance is required on that mortgage loan, as well as the total loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which did not require primary insurance.     Principal is due to release fourth-quarter results today. It has an average earnings surprise average of 4.8% and moves 4%, both up and down, in reaction to earnings announcements. Principal's stock has soared 50% in the past 12 months, easily outpacing indices, and 13% in the past three months. Consequently, it has passed many of analysts' price targets. Goldman is still bullish, but predicts just 7% of remaining upside in the next 12 months.

Lesser amounts of life and disability business are written on a facultative basis. The life/health business is marketed on a direct basis. The Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group (BHRG) operates from offices located in Stamford, Connecticut. Business activities are conducted through a group of subsidiary companies, led by National Indemnity Company (NICO) and Columbia Insurance Company (Columbia). BHRG provides principally excess and quota-share reinsurance to other property and casualty insurers and reinsurers. BHRG�� underwriting activities also include life reinsurance and life annuity business written through Berkshire Hathaway Life Insurance Company of Nebraska and financial guaranty insurance written through Berkshire Hathaway Assurance Corporation.

BHRG writes catastrophe excess-of-loss treaty reinsurance contracts. BHRG also writes individual policies for primarily large or otherwise unusual discrete risks on both an excess direct and facultative reinsurance basis, referred to as individual risk, which includes policies covering terrorism, natural catastrophe and aviation risks. U.S. Investment Corporation (USIC), through its three subsidiaries led by United States Liability Insurance Company, is a specialty insurer that underwrites commercial, professional and personal lines of insurance on an admitted and excess and surplus basis. Policies are marketed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia through wholesale and retail insurance agents. USIC companies underwrite and market 109 distinct specialty property and casualty insurance products. Medical Protective Corporation (MedPro) is based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The distribution companies primarily charge supply companies regulated tariffs for the use of electrical infrastructure. MidAmerican also owns HomeServices of America, Inc. (HomeServices), a full-service residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States. In addition, Acme distributes a number of other building products of other manufacturers, including glass block, floor and wall tile and other masonry products. Acme also sells ceramic floor and wall tile, as well as marble, granite and other stones through its subsidiary, American Tile and Stone. Products are sold primarily in the South Central and South Eastern United States through Company-operated sales offices. Acme distributes products primarily to homebuilders and masonry and general contractors.

Benjamin Moore & Co. (Benjamin Moore) is a formulator, manufacturer and retailer of a range of architectural coatings, available principally in the United States and Canada. Products include water-thinnable and solvent-thinnable general purpose coatings (paints, stains and clear finishes) for use by the general public, contractors and industrial and commercial users. Fiber glass is the basic material in a majority of JM�� products, although JM also manufactures a portion of its products with other materials to satisfy the broader needs of its customers. General Re subsidiaries conduct business activities globally in 51 cities and provide insurance and reinsurance coverages throughout the world. General Re provides property/casualty insurance and reinsurance, life/health reinsurance and other reinsurance intermediary and risk management, underwriting management and investment management services.

Property/Casualty Reinsurance

General Re�� property/c asualty reinsurance business in North America is conducted through GRC. Property/casualty operations in North America are also conducted through 16 branch offices in the United States and Canada. Reinsurance activities are marketed directly to clients without involving a broker or intermediary. General Re�� property/casualty business in North America also includes specialty insurers (primarily the General Star and Genesis companies domiciled in Connecticut and Ohio). These specialty insurers underwrite primarily liability and workers��compensation coverages on an excess and surplus basis and excess insurance for self-insured programs. General Re�� international property/casualty reinsurance business operations are conducted through internationally-based subsidiaries on a direct basis (through General Reinsurance AG, as well as several other General Re subsidiaries in 25 countries) and through brokers (primarily through Faraday, which owns the managing agent of Syndicat e 435 at Lloyd�� of London and provides capacity and ! parti! ci! pates i! n 100% of the results of Syndicate 435).

Life/Health Reinsurance

General Re�� North American and international life, health, long-term care and disability reinsurance coverages are written on an individual and group basis. Most of this business is written on a proportional treaty basis, with the exception of the United States group health and disability business which is predominately written on an excess treaty basis. Lesser amounts of life and disability business are written on a facultative basis. The life/health business is marketed on a direct basis. The Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group (BHRG) operates from offices located in Stamford, Connecticut. Business activities are conducted through a group of subsidiary companies, led by National Indemnity Company (NICO) and Columbia Insurance Company (Columbia). BHRG provides principally excess and quota-share reinsurance to other property and casualty insurers and reinsurers. BHRG�� underwrit ing activities also include life reinsurance and life annuity business written through Berkshire Hathaway Life Insurance Company of Nebraska and financial guaranty insurance written through Berkshire Hathaway Assurance Corporation.

BHRG writes catastrophe excess-of-loss treaty reinsurance contracts. BHRG also writes individual policies for primarily large or otherwise unusual discrete risks on both an excess direct and facultative reinsurance basis, referred to as individual risk, which includes policies covering terrorism, natural catastrophe and aviation risks. A catastrophe excess policy provides protection to the counterparty from the accumulation of primarily property losses arising from a single loss event or series of related events. Catastrophe and individual risk policies may provide amounts of indemnification per contract and a single loss event may produce losses under a number of contracts. BHRG also underwrites traditional non-catastrophe insurance and reinsurance coverages, referred to as multi-li! ne proper! t! y/casualt! y business.

The Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group is a collection of primary insurance operations that provide a variety of insurance coverages to insureds located principally in the United States. NICO and certain affiliates underwrite motor vehicle and general liability insurance to commercial enterprises on both an admitted and excess and surplus basis. This business is written nationwide primarily through insurance agents and brokers and is based in Omaha, Nebraska. U.S. Investment Corporation (USIC), through its three subsidiaries led by United States Liability Insurance Company, is a specialty insurer that underwrites commercial, professional and personal lines of insurance on an admitted and excess and surplus basis. Policies are marketed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia through wholesale and retail insurance agents. USIC companies underwrite and market 109 distinct specialty property and casualty insurance products. Medical Protective Corpora tion (MedPro) is based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Through its subsidiary, the Medical Protective Company, MedPro is engaged in primary medical professional liability coverage and risk solutions to physicians, dentists, other healthcare providers and healthcare facilities.

Railroad Business

Through BNSF Railway, BNSF operates a railroad network in North America with approximately 32,000 route miles of track (excluding multiple main tracks, yard tracks and sidings) in 28 states and two Canadian provinces as of December 31, 2011. BNSF owns approximately 23,000 route miles, including easements, and operates on approximately 9,000 route miles of trackage rights that permit BNSF to operate its trains with its crews over other railroads��tracks. As of December 31, 2011, the total BNSF Railway system, including single and multiple main tracks, yard tracks and sidings, consisted of approximately 50,000 operated miles of track, all of which are owned by or he ld under easement by BNSF except for approxi! mately 10! ,000 ro! ute miles! operated under trackage rights.

BNSF is based in Fort Worth, Texas, and through BNSF Railway Company operates railroad systems in North America. In serving the Midwest, Pacific Northwest, Western, Southwestern and Southeastern regions and ports of the country, BNSF transports a range of products and commodities derived from manufacturing, agricultural and natural resource industries. Over half of the freight revenues of BNSF are covered by contractual agreements of varying durations. The distribution companies primarily charge supply companies regulated tariffs for the use of electrical infrastructure. MidAmerican also owns HomeServices of America, Inc. (HomeServices) , a full-service residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States. HomeServices also offers integrated real estate services, including mortgage originations through a joint venture, title and closing services, property and casualty insurance, home warranties, relocation services and other home-related services. Engineered Wire & Cable, providing electrical and electronic wire and cable for energy related markets and other industries. (Fruit), Russell Brands, LLC (Russell), Vanity Fair Brands, LP (VFB), Garan and Fechheimer Brothers. Berkshire�� footwear businesses include H.H. Brown Shoe Group, Justin Brands and Brooks Athletic. Fruit, Russell and VFB (together FOL) is prima rily a verticall! y integra! ted manufacturer and distributor of! basic ap! parel, underwear and athletic apparel and products. Products, under the Fruit of the Loomand JERZEES labels are primarily sold in the mass merchandise and wholesale markets. In the VFB product line, Vassarette, Bestformand Curvationare sold in the mass merchandise market, while Vanity Fairand Lily of Franceproducts are sold in the mid-tier chains and department stores. FOL also markets and sells athletic uniforms, apparel, sports equipment and balls to team dealers; college licensed tee shirts and fleecewear to college bookstores and mid-tier merchants; and athletic apparel, sports equipment and balls to sporting goods retailers under the Russell Athleticand Spaldingbrands. In addition, Acme distributes a number of other building products of other manufacturers, including glass block, floor and wall tile and other masonry products. Acme also sells ceramic floor and wall tile, as well as marble, granite and other stones through its subsidiary, American Tile and Stone. Products are sold primarily in the South Central and South Eastern United States through Company-operated sales offices. Acme distributes products primarily to homebuilders and masonry and general contractors.

Benjamin Moore & Co. (Benjamin Moore) is a formulator, manufacturer and retailer of a range of architectural coatings, available principally in the United States and Canada. Products include water-thinnable and solvent-thinnable general purpose coatings (paints, stains and clear finishes) for use by the general public, contractors and industrial and commercial users. Products are marketed under various registered brand names, including Regal, Superspec, Moorcraft, Moorgard, Aura, Nattura, ben, Coronado Paint, Insl-xand Lenmar.

Small Commercial Business

Small Commercial Business segment provides workers��compensation to small businesses that operate in low and medium hazard classes, such as restaurants, retail stores, physicians and other professional offices, and commercial package and other property and casualty insurance products to small businesses. The Company is authorized to write its Small Commercial Business products in all 50 states. The Company distributes its policies through a network of over 8,100 select retail and wholesale agents who are paid commissions based on the annual policy premiums written. Commercial package products provide a range of insurance to small businesses, including commercial property, general liability, inland marine, automobile, workers��compensation, and umbrella coverage.

The Company maintains Small Commercial Business property and casualty claims operations in several of its domestic offices and the commercial package claims operation is separated into four processing units: casualty, propert! y, cost-containment/recovery and a fast-track physical damage unit. As of December 31, 2012, its Small Commercial Business property and casualty claims were approximately 61% automobile and 13% property and inland marine with the remaining 26% involving general liability and umbrella losses.

Specialty Risk and Extended Warranty

The Company��Specialty Risk and Extended Warranty segment provides coverage for consumer and commercial goods and custom designed coverages, such as accidental damage plans and payment protection plans offered in connection with the sale of consumer and commercial goods in the United States and Europe, and certain niche property, casualty and specialty liability risks in the United States and Europe, including general liability, employers��liability and professional and medical liability. specialty risk business primarily covers, such as legal expenses in the event of unsuccessful litigation; property damage for residential properties; home emergency repairs caused by incidents affecting systems, such as plumbing, wiring or central heating; latent defects that materialize on real property after building or completion; payment protection to insureds if they become unable to meet financial obligations under finance contracts; guaranteed asset protection (GAP) to cover the difference between an insurer�� settlement and the asset value in the event of a total loss, and general liability, employers��liability, public liability, negligence of advisors and liability of health care providers and medical facilities.

The Company's extended warranty business covers selected consumer and commercial goods and other risks, including personal computers; consumer electronics, such as televisions and home theater components; consumer appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines; automobiles (excluding liability coverage); furniture, and heavy equipment. The Company also serve as a third party administrator to provide claims handling and ca! ll center! services to the consumer products and automotive industries in the United States and Canada. It underwrites the specialty risk coverage on a coverage plan-level basis, which involves substantial data collection and actuarial analysis, as well as analysis of applicable laws governing policy coverage language and exclusions.

Specialty Program

The Company�� Specialty Program segment provides workers��compensation, package products, general liability, commercial auto liability, excess and surplus lines programs and other specialty commercial property and casualty insurance to a narrowly defined, homogeneous group of small and middle market companies. The type of risk covered by this segment is similar to the type of risk in Small Commercial Business but also covers, to a small extent, certain higher risk businesses. The coverage is offered through accounts with various agents to multiple insureds. Policyholders in this segment primarily include industries, such as retail, wholesale, service operations, artisan contracting, trucking, light and medium manufacturing, habitational and professional employer organizations. As of December 31, 2012, the Company underwrote 77 programs through 44 independent wholesale and managing general agents. Personal Lines Reinsurance

The Company�� Personal Lines Reinsurance Segment has a 20% participation in the Personal Lines Quota Share, by which it receive 10% of the net premiums of the personal lines business. The United Kingdom utilities consist of Northern Powergrid (Northeast) Limited (Northern Powergrid (Northeast)) and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc (Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire)), which own a substantial United Kingdom electricity distribution network that delivers electricity to end-users in northeast England in an area covering approximately 10,000 square miles. The distribution companies primarily charge supply companies regulated tariffs for the use of electrical infrastructure. MidAmerican also owns HomeServices of America, Inc. (HomeServices), a full-service residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States. HomeServices also offers integrated real estate services, including mortgage originations through a joint venture, title and closing services, property and casualty insurance, home warranties, relocation services and other home-related services. Crane Services provides the leasing and operation of mobile cranes primarily to the energy, mining and petrochemical markets. Distribution Services, supplying specialty metal pipe and tubing, bar and sheet products to markets including construction, industrial, aerospace and many others. Engineered Wire & Cable, providing electrical and electronic wire and cable for energy related markets and other industries. Flow Products is producing copper tube for the plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, and industrial markets. Food Service Equipment is supplying commercial food preparation equipment for restaurants and shopping carts for retail stores. Highway Technologies, primarily serving the heavy-duty highway transportation industry with trailers, fifth wheel coupling devices and undercarriage products such as brake parts and suspension systems, and also serving the light vehicle aftermarket with clutches and related products.

Berkshire�� apparel manufacturing businesses include manufacturers of a variety of clothing and footwear. Businesses engaged in the manufacture and distribution of clothing products include Fruit of the Loom, Inc. (Fruit), Russell Brands, LLC (Russell), Vanity Fair Brands, LP (VFB), Garan and Fechheimer Brothers. Berkshire�� footwear businesses include H.H. Brown Shoe Group, Justin Brands and Brooks Athletic. Fruit, Russell and VFB (together FOL) is primarily a vertically integrated manufacturer and distributor of ba! sic appar! el, underwear and athletic apparel and products. Products, under the Fruit of the Loomand JERZEES labels are primarily sold in the mass merchandise and wholesale markets. In the VFB product line, Vassarette, Bestformand Curvationare sold in the mass merchandise market, while Vanity Fairand Lily of Franceproducts are sold in the mid-tier chains and department stores. FOL also markets and sells athletic uniforms, apparel, sports equipment and balls to team dealers; college licensed tee shirts and fleecewear to college bookstores and mid-tier merchants; and athletic apparel, sports equipment and balls to sporting goods retailers under the Russell Athleticand Spaldingbrands. Additionally, Spaldingmarkets and sells balls in the mass merchandise market and dollar store channel. During the year ended December, 31, 2011, approximately 30% of FOL�� sales were to Wal-Mart. FOL generally performs its own spinning, knitting, cloth finishing, cutting, sewing and packaging.

Garan designs, manufactures, imports and sells apparel primarily for children, including boys, girls, toddlers and infants. Products are sold under its own trademark Garanimalsand private labels of its customers. Garan also licenses its registered trademark Garanimalsto independent third parties. Garan conducts its business through operating subsidiaries located in the United States, Central America and Asia. Substantially all of Garan�� products are sold through its distribution centers in the United States to national chain stores, department stores and specialty stores. In 2011, over 90% of Garan�� sales were to Wal-Mart. Fechheimer Brothers manufactures, distributes and sells uniforms, principally for the public service and safety markets, including police, fire, postal and military markets. Fechheimer Brothers is based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Justin Brands and H.H. Brown Shoe Group manufacture and distribute work, rugged outdoor and casual shoes and western-style footwear under a number of brand names, including! Justin, ! Tony Lama, Nocona, Chippewas, Born, Sofft, Carolina, Double-H Boots, Corcoran, Matterhornand Kork-Ease. Brooks Athletic markets and sells running footwear to specialty retailers under Brooksbrand. A volume of the shoes sold by Berkshire�� shoe businesses are manufactured or purchased from sources outside the United States. Products are principally sold in the United States through a variety of channels including department stores, footwear chains, specialty stores, catalogs and the Internet, as well as through Company-owned retail stores.

Acme manufactures and distributes clay bricks (Acme Brickand Jenkins Brick), concrete block (Featherlite) and cut limestone (Texas Quarries). In addition, Acme distributes a number of other building products of other manufacturers, including glass block, floor and wall tile and other masonry products. Acme also sells ceramic floor and wall tile, as well as marble, granite and other stones through its subsidiary, American Tile and Stone. Products are sold primarily in the South Central and South Eastern United States through Company-operated sales offices. Acme distributes products primarily to homebuilders and masonry and general contractors.

Benjamin Moore & Co. (Benjamin Moore) is a formulator, manufacturer and retailer of a range of architectural coatings, available principally in the United States and Canada. Products include water-thinnable and solvent-thinnable general purpose coatings (paints, stains and clear finishes) for use by the general public, contractors and industrial and commercial users. Products are marketed under various registered brand names, including Regal, Superspec, Moorcraft, Moorgard, Aura, Nattura, ben, Coronado Paint, Insl-xand Lenmar.

Benjamin Moore and its manufacturing subsidiaries rely primarily on an independent dealer network for the distribution of its products. Its distribution network includes approximately 100! Company-! owned stores as well as over 4,500 third party retailers representing over 10,300 storefronts in the United States and Canada. Benjamin Moore�� Company-owned stores represent several multiple-outlet and stand-alone retailers in various parts of the United States and Canada serving primarily contractors and general consumers. The independent retailer channel offers an array of products including Benjamin Mooreand Insl-xbrands and other competitor coatings, wallcoverings, window treatments and sundries. Benjamin Moore also has three color stations located in regional malls that serve as brand marketing tools. In addition to the independent retailer channel, Benjamin Moore has recently begun to sell direct to the consumer through e-commerce sites and its customer care program, which includes national accounts and government agencies.

Johns Manville (JM) is a manufacturer and marketer of products for building insulation, mechanical insulation, commercial roofing and roof insulation, as well as fibers and nonwovens for commercial, industrial and residential applications. JM serves markets that include aerospace, automotive and transportation, air handling, appliance, HVAC, pipe and equipment filtration, waterproofing, building, flooring, interiors and wind energy. Fiber glass is the basic material in a majority of JM�� products, although JM also manufactures a portion of its products with other materials to satisfy the broader needs of its customers. JM regards its patents and licenses as valuable, however it does not consider any of its businesses to be materially dependent on any single patent or license. JM is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, and operates 40 manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and China and conducts research and development at several other facilities. JM sells its products through a variety of channels, including contractors, distributors, retailers, manufacturers and fabricators.

MiTek is a provider of engineered connector products, engine! ering sof! tware and services and computer-driven manufacturing machinery to the truss fabrication segment of the building components industry. Primary customers are truss fabricators who manufacture pre-fabricated roof and floor trusses and wall panels for the residential building market, as well as the light commercial and institutional construction industry. MiTek also participates in the light gauge steel framing market under the Ultra-Spanname, manufactures and markets assembly line machinery used by the lead acid battery industry, manufactures and markets a line of masonry connector products and manufactures and markets air handling systems used in commercial building. MiTek operates on six continents with sales into approximately 90 countries. MiTek has 34 manufacturing facilities located in eleven countries and 45 sales/engineering offices located in 17 countries.

The Shaw Industries Group, Inc. (Shaw) is a carpet manufacturer based on both revenue and volume of production. Shaw designs and manufactures over 3,000 styles of tufted carpet, tufted and woven rugs, laminate and wood flooring for residential and commercial use under about 30 brand and trade names and under certain private labels. Shaw also provides installation services and sells ceramic and vinyl tile along with sheet vinyl. Shaw�� manufacturing operations are fully integrated from the processing of raw materials used to make fiber through the finishing of carpet. Shaw�� carpet, rugs and hard surface products are sold in a broad range of prices, patterns, colors and textures.

Shaw products are sold wholesale to over 40,000 retailers, distributors and commercial users throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and are also exported to various overseas markets. Shaw�� wholesale products are marketed domestically by over 2,000 salaried and commissioned sales personnel directly to retailers and distributors and to national accounts.
