Stock markets around the world plunged on Tuesday and investors demanded higher yields in return for taking on Italian government debt.
The main stock index in Italy extended its losses for the week, dropping another 3%. The country's banks were hardest hit, with some stocks falling by over 5%.
Investors are worried that political turmoil in Italy could cause pain beyond the country's borders. The yields on Spanish, Portuguese and Greek debt surged, and US stocks opened lower.
Italy is heading for new elections after populist politicians failed to form a government. Radical parties could gain even more ground, and investors are worried that the vote will turn into a de-facto referendum on the euro.
Some market observers worry Italy may ultimately crash out of the European Union -- a scenario they've dubbed "Italexit" or "Quitaly."
Contagion threat
The big risk is that Italian politicians will stop following the rules of the euro or perhaps even seek to ditch the currency. The euro dropped 1% against the US dollar on Tuesday, a reflection of investor concerns.

For this episode, it's time to check in on not one but two such samplers. First, it's been one year since he offered up "Five Stocks I Own That You Should Too." Those were Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG), Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG), Match Group (NASDAQ:MTCH), and Zillow (NASDAQ:Z) (NASDAQ:ZG), and he'll review their progress with senior analyst Jim Mueller.

Two of my favorite medical-device stocks are Align Technology (NASDAQ:ALGN) and Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG). However, I've liked Intuitive a lot more after Align's share price plunged in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) is best known for its da Vinci robotic surgical system. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) might be most famous for its consumer healthcare products. But there's a lot more to picking between these two stocks than just comparing robots and Band-Aids.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By ]
Nordstrom (JWN) was down 8.5% after the department-store operator was downgraded to Underweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley. Nordstrom stock dropped 18% on Wednesday after reporting earnings.
- [By ]
Nordstrom (ticker: JWN) reported fiscal second-quarter earnings of 49 cents a share, ahead of consensus estimates at 27 cents a share, according to FactSet. Sales of $3.57 billion were up 101% from last year and above consensus estimates at $3.34 billion. Still, sales were down 6% from the same period in 2019, before the pandemic withered traffic counts in department stores.
- [By Dan Caplinger (TMFGalagan)]
However, there were some hints of discontentment in the after-hours session, as a couple of retail stocks reported disappointing earnings results. Both Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) and Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN) lost ground, and what they said could cast a shadow over the idea that the vaccination-led economic recovery will inevitably produce strength across the retail industry.
- [By Rhian Hunt (TMFRhianHunt)]
Physical retail is clearly Amazon's weakest point, despite multiple attempts by the e-commerce giant to break into this market. With the company's relative lack of success in the space and the small size of the stores relative to other department stores limiting the selection of products likely to be on display at any future "Amazon department store," it's difficult to see the idea as a serious threat to either department stores like Macy's and Kohl's, or more specialized retailers such as Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) or Ross Stores (NASDAQ:ROST). Nor do the stores seem likely to improve Amazon's delivery or return services significantly, given how quick and efficient those services already are.
